well, i drove my first hero car. and for the last two and half years i’ve been driving a 1991 jaguar xjs v12. i’ve driven it everywhere, literally, almost. i drove it from nyc to los angeles to seattle back to nyc. and its been, well, its a jaguar. but i’ve loved nearly every minute of it. its stranded me numerous times. broken alternator belts, worn out alternator, cooling systems, electric fans, faulty AC in death valley, ruptured fuel lines, transmission leaks, countless drained batteries... yet still i did my best to keep it rolling.

Kinja'd!!!

i’ve driven nearly 20,000 miles since i’ve owned her. but now that she’s leaking everything: oil, atf, coolant, exhaust, electrons, refrigerant, blinker fluid, i can no longer keep her on the road and maintain my responsibilities. alas, she will take nearly 3 months of my time to mend these problems, maybe more.

Kinja'd!!!

and so, i am moving on to my next hero car.

appropriately, in my first drive to test drive hero #2, the jaguar decided to run hot, eventually spewing coolant all over the roads of queens. as if she knew i was off looking for her replacement. but no, she has no sentience, and i eventually did drive hero #2, and i am smitten again. and soon one of these will be my new means of transport.

will let you know how this all goes...

Jesus man, nyc-la-seattle-nyc in a 90s v12 Jaguar? There are lots of support groups and porn sites for people who are masochistic.

But really though, thanks for keeping her on the road for as long as you did. I fear the day where the amazing cars of yesteryear all but disappear from our roadways. Best of luck with the Porsche!

90s is generous. it was designed in the 70s and had some minor upgrades throughout the 80s.

and in fact it was supposed to be a nyc - la - nyc trip over 20 days. but turned into a nyc to la (4 days), wait 1 week, nyc to seattle 3 days (wait 5 months), seattle to helena 7 days ( wait 4 months) helena to nyc 9 days.

but yeah... what better way to roll across our country than 12 cylinders powering the rear wheels in a 17ft personal luxury coupe?

well, have test driven 3. i know one is in my near future. as much as i like the pre-s4 tail, the s4s look crazy good in person, and i’ll likely choose something post ‘87. if i had the funds, a gts would be best, but most gts’s are currently being laid up for collector status and asking over 60k.

ive also decided that due to the type of driving this car will endure, an auto trans is ok. no flames, but the extra 4-5k premium for a manual isnt required for me. and i have a 996 manual also if i want to go sport driving.

anyway, yes, i’ll keep you up to date. i’ve been following your 944 stories, and wish the best for you. specifically, keep your head up when it seems everything else is pushing you down. keep your nose in the books when school is most important. and never forget you can always get yourself into a better situation.

If you think that Jag costed dearly to keep on running, be prepared for an even more expensive one. I’ve owned a 928S and although it truly is a hero, it was one of the most expensive experiences ever. Would do it again in a heartbeat though. If I didn’t have the experience of owning a 911 that is...

Electrons & blinker fluid. Those are the hardest to keep topped up, even in my Toyota.

It’s great that you kept her (sort of) running for so long. Best of luck to you with the next hero car!

You want the S4. It’s a better car. And manual would be fun, but an auto is fine in a GT car.

You’re going from an XJ-S V12 to a 928? That’s amazing. If you bought a Maserati Biturbo you could complete the 1980’s hell car trifecta. That said, Both those cars are on my dream list. Post pics of your 928 when you buy one!

thanks. this is what i needed. more definitive recommendations. the tail of the pre-S4 is just so classic it was swaying my heart. but my head kept saying to go with the more modern car. and yeah, an auto will be fine for this car’s duties. if a 5-speed falls in my lap, all the better.

thanks again.

GTS is sooo expensive now; but I know of a cheap one you can get in Argentina.....

The auto trans in the 928 is fantastic I’ve been told. I believe it’s a Merc trans, so it’s reputably very reliable, especially with the supercharged one I saw last weekend making 508whp. You have a 996 as well? You’re living my dream there. :)

Thanks very much. I got my “new” struts Saturday and am currently in the process of painting for installation tomorrow afternoon. Should be fun, I hope! It’s certainly been an adventure, this car and I, and I don’t want to end ever.
